The European Society of Exogeography and Space Exploration

A multidisciplinary platform dedicated to rethinking outer space through the lenses of human experience, culture, and governance

Space exploration is not just a technological frontier, but a new dimension for humanity.Life in space will demand solutions to physical and environmental challenges, as well as the development of new social structures, models of coexistence, and governance paradigms.

THE SOCIETY

We envision outer space not only as a technical frontier, but as a shared and sustainable domain, shaped by values, governance, and imagination. As space exploration gains prominence in global agendas, it is essential to approach it not only through science and technology but also via the humanities and social sciences, integrating political, social, and environmental perspectives into our understanding of extraterrestrial environments. We bring together scholars, professionals, and enthusiasts - from both the humanities and the sciences - who see space not merely as a technical domain, but as a realm imbued with meaning, memory, and responsibility.

Why Exogeography

Exogeography investigates outer space as a novel domain of human geography, framing it through the interrelated concepts of terraforming, space-making, spatial organisation, extraterrestrial governance, and sustainability beyond Earth. This approach considers not only the physical transformation of extraterrestrial environments, but also the social, political, and regulatory frameworks that will shape human presence beyond our planet.A central concern is the morphology and habitability of extraterrestrial environments, which underpins the planning of future human settlements and the governance of supranational space territories. The subfield of population exogeography examines prospective patterns of human settlement in space, addressing mobility flows, population distribution, density gradients, resource allocation, and adaptive strategies under unprecedented environmental conditions, while highlighting both practical constraints and geopolitical challenges.

Vision and Mission

VISION
Outer space as a responsible, inclusive, and shared commons, preserved and sustained for generations to come.
MISSION
We advance an interdisciplinary understanding of outer space by:
- Promoting critical thinking on space as a human, cultural, and spatial frontier.- Fostering dialogue across the humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines.- Supporting research and education on the societal and environmental sustainability of space exploration.- Advancing a European and humanistic perspective in space policies and narratives.
